Our [7-Step] Website Development Process

A good website needs strategic planning, talented design, skilled development, a lot of testing and regular maintenance. Put all that together and you will have a website that not only looks great but is also enjoyable to use.

When we’re developing websites for our clients, we use our winning 7-step web design development process:

Step[01]

Information gathering

To build a website that works for your brand and your customers, we need to know a lot about both. That’s why all good web design development starts with researching purpose, people and content.

Purpose: Before we start working on website structure and design, we’ll work closely with you to understand your requirements. A full understanding of your website's purpose helps us work efficiently to meet your goals and your customers' needs. The most popular website purposes are to inform customers and to sell to customers online. There are some websites that do both.

People: Once we know the purpose, we start looking at the people who will use your website.
Helping you identify your exact target audience. We need to know about the people you would like to reach first. What their ages are, along with their interests and habits. Answering these questions will help us to determine the best design style for the website.

Content: A website's content and design are directly interconnected with each other. When they start planning a site, designers first get acquainted with the website content. By understanding the kind of information the target audience is looking for, they understand how a website will be used.
In turn, this will inform the look and functionality of your website.

Step[02]

Design

A well-designed website will strengthen a brand’s identity. During the design phase, our designers will carefully and tastefully apply the visual elements of your brand. Using your logo and brand colours to produce a website that enhances your brand and wows your customers.

During the design phase, the team will create one or more prototypes for your website. A prototype is typically a static image, which represents the final look of the website.  Prototypes allow the designers to collaborate with you to ensure that the final website matches your needs, taste, and vision. This is a crucial step for idea exchange and brainstorming.

Step[03]

Planning

With the research complete, it’s time to put together a detailed website plan. At this point, we will create a sitemap that lays out the main topic areas of your website. Sitemaps help clarify what content will be used and how your customers will navigate around the website.

Your customers are the end-users, so we’ll build the website for them. Their journey from landing on the site to making a purchase has to be as simple as possible. From a customer's perspective, the foundation of an easy-to-navigate website is an excellent user interface e.g. how the website looks. In reality, behind all the beautiful graphics and carefully written words, is a well-thought-out structure.

Step[04]

Development

At this point, the final design prototypes will have been agreed upon and be ready to go. To take the design from the page to create the final website requires extra development effort. This is where our skilled developers step in to translate the design into HTML/CSS (website coding). They will also add a layer of animations or JavaScript, depending on the complexity of the design.

First, they will develop the homepage, followed by a ‘shell' for the interior pages. The shell serves as a template for the inner pages of the website. This ensures the main menu and footer for the website remain consistent throughout the site.

Once this shell has been created, the design and marketing team work together to populate the internal pages with content. This is also when any interactive elements, like contact forms and e-commerce shopping carts, are added.

Communication between you and our team will be frequent at this stage. You will have access to view the site as it progresses in the content stage. This allows you to easily communicate any changes that need to be applied.

Step[05]

Testing

When the content and the visuals are in place, we will begin the testing process. Every page has to be tested to make sure that all links are working and the website is displayed correctly. We’ll also test the site in different browsers and on different screen sizes.

No stone will be left unturned as every element of a website plays an important role. Even the word order in titles and descriptions has an impact on a webpage's performance in various search engines. Later, when we have some traffic on the site, we can apply A/B testing techniques to optimise pages further.

Step[06]

Final Steps & Launch

Once you have given your final approval, it is time for the website to go live. But before that, the site will be re-tested for the last time ... just to be sure.

Ahead of putting the website live, your chosen domain name will be registered and web hosting accounts set up.

To help your website achieve a higher search engine position and be fully functional, there are final steps that we tweak. This includes plugin installation (for WordPress or other CMS-driven websites) and Search Engine Optimisation activities. Optimisation for search engines plays a vital role because it ensures that your website can easily be found on Google or other browsers.

Step[07]

Maintenance

A website is, in some ways, like a car. Specifically in the area of maintenance. Like a car, once a website is on the road it will require regular maintenance to keep it running. This involves the occasional update, tweak and check-up. It also includes user testing, which we will run over and over to improve the usability and discoverability of site features.

The 7 steps of the web design development process outlined above provide only an overview of the different stages. Every site is unique and so the stages occasionally change and are adjusted for a project’s needs and specifics. Overall, we believe that a good working relationship with you, the client, is the key to a successful website project.

Our [Clients]

Benefits of Good [Website] Design

Good website design goes beyond beautiful graphics and a well-chosen colour palette. Good website design takes into account how a site will be used, who the user is and what they want. It will influence everything from how your customers use your website to your search engine ranking.
Good website design:

Impresses Customers With Style

Your website is your shop window online and your customers need to be excited by what they see. You have fractions of a second to make a good impression on digital customers. How your site looks is one of the first chances you have to impress them. Great design will draw in your customers, enticing them to explore further. Inspiring them to do more on the site.

Engages Customers With Creativity

Every website needs a balance of different content types. Like a good recipe, you need just the right amount of each ingredient for the best result. In this case, the ingredients are text, images, illustrations, videos and more. Too much of the wrong ingredient can result in a website that is confusing and difficult to navigate. A great design team knows just how to get the right balance of creative content.

Persuades Customers With Good Writing

The language and writing of your website must be compelling. Interesting enough to engage your customer but not too bogged down in detail as to bore them. Web copy writing is easy to read, easy to browse through and convincing. The text on your website serves two purposes; to inform, which builds trust, and to convince, which converts to sales.

Speeds Up Your Website

Nothing turns a customer away faster than a website that is slow to load. Consumers are impatient and will instantly leave a site that doesn’t load in mere seconds. If overlooked, there are a lot of issues that could slow a site down, unoptimised images, flash content, too many HTTP requests and more. When designers and developers work together (like the team here in ePresence) these features are optimised for a faster website.

Makes Website Navigation Easy

Website navigation is planned at the site map stage and for a very important reason. Website users who can’t easily find what they want will bounce off the site in less than five seconds. To avoid this, good design uses a combination of language, consumer behaviour insights, smart layout, visuals and links. With good design, your customer will intuitively know how to move around the site.

Improves Website Conversions

You might ask, how can design influence conversions? The first answer is trust. Remember, design is more than just the visual elements, it is the structure and content too. With persuasive content, like testimonials, well placed call to actions (CTA) and even a touch of colour psychology, customers convert. By having the right amount of content on a site and no clutter, your customers will be less distracted. Good design keeps the customers focused on the important parts of the site and leads them naturally to a purchase.

A Note About [WordPress]

WordPress is by far the most popular content management system (CMS). In fact, the WordPress
CMS powers at least 43.3% of all the websites on the internet.

There are a ton of reasons WordPress is so popular – it’s free to download and use, easy to learn, and flexible. On top of that, it’s also search engine friendly. Plus, thousands of themes and plugins make it one of the most customisable platforms available. That definitely aligns WordPress with our core CMS definition and more.

Other Content Management Systems we have experience in using include Shopify, Joomla, Drupal & Squarespace.

Frequently [Asked] Questions

This is dependent on the complexity of the site you want and need. Typically a website design will take a minimum of two months.

Of course, we are a little biased here, but there are many reasons why we don’t advise these self build options.

They include:

  • They can take your site down at any time and for any reason. You are never in full control.
  • You have limited design customisation. Once your site is built, you can’t change your theme or functionality. It may also be difficult if not impossible, to customise your theme exactly as you would like.
  • Search engine optimisation. Not all designs are SEO-friendly. Getting ranked in a search engine like Google can take months of time and effort. Make sure your website is compatible with your SEO efforts to avoid your hard work being wasted.
  • Your site is not portable. You are building your site with the proprietary technology of a third party website. Technology that only works on their system.

You’ll have to rebuild your entire website from scratch, if:

    • You outgrow their capabilities.
    • You decide you want to move your site to a different web hosting provider.
    • You want a more SEO friendly site.

You’re pretty much on your own.
If you’re not a techie person and don’t have the time or desire to figure it all out, there is no backup. You are better off hiring a professional that knows what they’re doing.

  • The number of pages of your site
  • The complexity of the site
  • Ecommerce functionality
  • Design requirements
  • Copywriting and photography
Technology advancement is changing quite rapidly, but the technology on your website should last into the future. We recommend a refresh every 3-4 years to stay up to date.
